course work an


I wanted to try a different material to paint and design on, to see if it would be better .I decided to use cotton because I thought it had a hard structure so it would be good to paint on and it has a good textual feel. Plus if I decided to actually sew into it, it wouldn’t rip out where as on the paper it did. With the paper I had the problem of the stitching ripping out if I pulled it too much. Also if I tried to add too many layers of paint the paper would go too thin. I like how these pieces show how each colour really contrasts with the cream cotton. Also it meant I could see what colour I could use for my final piece.





I created all these pieces of work so I could see what different backgrounds and textures work well together. I had to paint the piece of paper with my chosen colour. I chose dark colours as I thought the salt and sugar would stand out more for the textures. After painting the piece of paper I had to apply pva glue and sprinkle salt and sugar gentle all over the paper. I wanted certain parts of the piece to have a stronger texture. So I put more salt or sugar on that part and made sure there was a lot of glue. After letting it dry I would rub off any excess salt or sugar. Then I added ink, but instead of using a sponge or a paintbrush I just gently tripped the bottle so drops fell on the paper. These then looked like spread out tear or raindrops and I just hung the piece up to dry so they dripped down the page. The affects of these techniques are it creates a 3D feeling. After doing all these techniques it let me evaluate what worked well together and what I could consider to use in my final piece.

Analysis Of two Pieces of  work

Cy Twombly
Born on April 25 in 1928,In a city called Lexington , Virginia, (United States).
Died on July 5th in Rome ( Italy) in 2011.
He studied at Black Mountain College

The main focus I feel for this painting is at the bottom of the page which looks like a mountain or a hill of some sort , he has used a lot of natural colours ( tertiary )which I feel gives it the feeling of a eco system. Twombly has used lots of shading and different tones of colours as well which is why I feel its mainly focused on this part because it stands out over all the rest and catches the viewers eye. Twombly also have used a lot of different style brush strokes which creates a different texture to the painting also giving it the feeling of 3D ahow ever the linear marks are 2-D.As well as this he has created the texture by using long brush strokes in which looks a thick creamy colour paint I feel this adds tone to the painting too.
Twombly for the top half of his painting has used a thin paint brush with an orange colour and has written in a tiny writing in a angled way , I feel this it in interoperate wind as it gives off the affect the writing is acting like it or if fact being blowed by the wind as its has all flicks going in different directions leading you all different ways and makes the viewers eye follow of the paths which are the flicks.. The secondary  colour orange in the painting however could be to interoperate fire as it starts small but then gets bigger and goes in every direction this could be shown in the paint by the thin writing or infact at the right hand corner its starts tiny but then its increases like its  ready to set off and take over.





Shawn Mcnulty
Born in April on the 15th in 1975.
He is an American contemporary painter

The main focus for this piece of art work is in the middle of the canvas which looks like a little isolated building. He has used lots of tone to create the affect of different heats . The bottom of the piece gives off a hotter / warmer vibe as the primary colour red stands out over all of the piece how ever the red could stand for danger too where as the top half of the canvas I think gives of a cold feeling which is shown in the isolated object in the middle of the piece. The secondary colour orange gives off the affect its getting colder as you look up through the painting which links to the building to. .The linear line marks are 2-D.
He has used a range of different brush strokes however I feel he used this to cover the building to make it look like he wants the viewer to see the image but not in detail so he used the primary colour yellow in a way like a wash to cover the isolated building .Also in this piece at the bottom he seems to use straight line brush strokes making the feeling of layers.

Both these pieces of art use a range of different brush strokes and colours . Mcnulty uses different brush strokes to emphasize the faded building where as Twombly uses the range of brush strokes to create the textures and make the colours stand out more and visible. The colours are different too Twombly sticks to natural more secondary colours which have been mixed with other colours to create their tone where as Mcnulty uses mostly primary colours to make certain parts of the piece stand out a lot more and he hasn’t really used much shading either. Mcnulty piece seems to look more neat this is due to the blocks of colours and how he has created his brush strokes this is a lot different to Mcnulty because Mcnulty painting doesn‘t seem neat at all he has used not the same brush strokes plus he has used direction therefore creates a more textured and toned feeling to the painting.

Robert Rauschenberg



Robert was born in 1925 in Texas in a small town called Milton Ernest Rauschenberg ( United states ) on October 22nd.
He died in 2008 in Florida on may 12th on a Monday night. The cause of his death was heart failure.
 His fathers name was Ernest, he was a very strong willed and strict man , he worked for Gulf State Utilities which is a power company . His mothers name was Dora and she was a very strong Christian . She earned money by making items of clothing for families out of unwanted scraps , Robert was truly ashamed of this , and many people say this could have influenced some of his most recent collages.
Robert did marry a women called Susan Weil in 1950, she was a painter, however they quickly divorced three years later in 1953.Also in the 1950s at the same time as he married he started this journey as an Abstract Expressionist.

To create this piece he used oil paint , screen prints on a canvas and acrylic paints.


The main focus I feel for this image is near the top left which looks like an old power station . He has used lots of bold shading which makes that part stand out a lot more also because it’s the only part of the collage which hasn’t got lightly painted brushstrokes in a white / grey mix of colours like a wash so then you can see it a lot more clearly. Robert has used lots of smudge effective paint strokes on the other images which makes the effect of him trying to fade the images underneath away. Another thing Robert uses a lot, is straight and slightly angled lines which gives off the affect they have been cut out of either a photo album or a magazine or newspaper, and placed in that certain way to give off a message or infact to tell a story. The linear marks on the collage are 2-D.Roberts tone on this collage is dark, he uses a lot of black to create a bold shading, for example on the right bottom hand corner although the tree is black,  he has used a black lightly smudge brush stroke then which looks like a dark charcoal gone over half of the tree creating the feel in which half of the tree is  shadowing the other half . He uses  primary colours such  black and white mainly for the images. This is so you can see them better and makes them stand out more, however he does infact used secondary colours as you can see in the collage grey and light blue. He tends to use the grey and light blue to fade the images underneath out, this is so you can still see the image just not in full detail where as if you used the black you would not be able to see anything at all . All the colours are dull and gloomy which I feel associates with low key lighting as it gives off the feeling its been created to look older than it actually is.
